James has worked in the real estate industry for a total of 16 years, including 10 years of commercial real estate appraisal experience and holds the MAI designation. Before joining Bowery he served as a VP at CBRE in their Valuation & Advisory group. James has appraised a wide range of assets including multifamily, office, industrial, self-storage, retail, development sites, and real estate portfolios. He is a specialist in the valuation of affordable housing, including LIHTC and Section 8 properties. His clients include banks, pension funds, private equity, government institutions, attorneys and developers. James is a graduate of Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business. He is vegan and has completed the NYC Marathon three times. He lives with his wife and daughter in Manhattan.

Director, Head of Quality Control

Jan L. Decker, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS is the Director, Head of Quality Control of Bowery Real Estate Systems. She has over 35 years of valuation experience in a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial real estate appraisal and consulting assignments, including easements and condemnation; office buildings; special-purpose properties; shopping centers; apartment buildings; multifamily development appraisals; financial analysis; market and feasibility studies; subdivision and land development analysis; property tax consulting;  and other real estate advisory services.


Prior to joining Bowery, Ms. Decker briefly served as the Senior Commercial Valuation Analyst at Columbia Bank, in Fair Lawn, NJ, where she performed appraisal reviews; evaluated appraisal reports to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory guidelines, and bank policy; worked with appraisal vendors to resolve valuation issues, provided feedback on the overall report quality and recommended action when needed; and acted as a liaison between the appraisal department and lending, credit, internal loan review and special assets areas regarding appraisal issues.


Ms. Decker spent a majority of her career at Integra Realty Resources as a Principal of the IRR -Northern New Jersey office. In her last six years with the company, she worked out of the corporate office as the corporate Quality Control and Compliance Officer. In this role, she was responsible for oversight of corporate compliance policy and standard operating procedures, as well as the review and resolution of all product quality and client service complaints. Ms. Decker also served as Integra’s  Director  of Training, responsible for directing all corporate-wide education and training. Additionally, Ms. Decker completed various initiatives aimed at improving report quality, appraisal process efficiency and data compliance. She is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt in process improvement.

Director

Andrew has over 36 years of experience in real estate valuation. His most recent stint was 4 years at BBG where is was responsible for review and quality control. Prior to that Andrew spent 30 years at Bankers Trust and its successor Deutsche Bank, where he was the Head of Valuation for the Americas at Deutsche Bank, New York, NY.

 

He started his career with Emigrant Savings Bank and Brown Harris Stevens. At Deutsche Bank's CRM-REV Appraisal Group for the Americas, he managed a group  comprised  of four to  eight  appraisers  and additional external consultants. He was responsible  for  engaging, reviewing  and managing  national appraisal assignments for the CMBS Large Loan, Conduit, Warehouse, Bank Syndication, Special Situations and Private Wealth groups. Loan products included balance sheet loans, conduit loans, large loans, and floating rate transactions. Year end  2014 volume was in  excess of  $30B. He also handled consulting and due diligence assignments valuing NPL loans for Special Situations Group.

 

Additionally, Andrew took part in evaluating and conducting due diligence on international portfolios of distressed and corporate for sale assets. Assignments included portfolios in Canada, China, Ireland, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Slovakia and South Korea.

Director

Helen has over 32 years of experience in real estate valuation. The majority of her career was spent at Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank. The first few years of her career was spent at Chase Manhattan Bank as an Appraiser with the last few years spent as a Director at BBG in New York City with the responsibility of Quality Control Reviewer.

 At Deutsche Bank, Helen was a Director where she handled consulting, due diligence and prescreening of deals for various areas of the bank . Responsibilities included assessment of the transaction, cash flow analysis, market research, site visits and review of structure and documentation. Helen has also evaluated and conducted due diligence on domestic and international portfolios. Portfolios comprised of distressed mortgages and real estate owned assets. Travels covered Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Sweden, Italy, France, Canada, Mexico, Czech Republic and Germany.

In addition, in her role as a Review Appraiser she ordered and reviewed appraisals,  provided  market data  as well as opined on values for all property types on a national basis. During her tenure at Chase Manhattan Bank, Helen was a Second Vice President and Senior Staff Appraiser. Her experience involves writing and reviewing reports for various property types including commercial, industrial, residential and retail. Property located in Metropolitan and Suburban New York.

After graduating from Rutgers University with dual degrees in both Arts and Sciences, Sherif began his own appraisal firm in NJ. Soon after, he began mentoring young appraisers and studied advanced valuation techniques. For an additional two years of rigorous exams and valuation experience, he achieved the expertise necessary to obtain the MAI designation through the Appraisal Institute. Soon after becoming an MAI and AI instructor, he began work at Jerome Haims Realty, a commercial valuation firm with 50+ years of complex experience, based in NYC. Looking for new challenges, Sherif joined Bowery in March 2018. Sherif is also an avid masters level weightlifter and certified referee of USA Weightlifting, participating at national competitions.

Brandon has spent over nine years in the real estate industry with more than six years in the appraisal field. Prior to joining Bowery, Brandon was an appraiser at the Leitner Group Inc./BBG, working throughout the NYC area and Mid-Atlantic region on a wide variety of asset types. Prior to appraising, Brandon was a Development Associate for Arcadia Land Company, a Philadelphia-based real estate land development and consulting company. Brandon is a licensed certified general appraisal license in four states and is a candidate for designation of the Appraisal Institute. Brandon graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Urban Studies. During his free time, he likes to travel the world with his fiancée Sophie.

Katelin is a Vice President at Bowery Valuation. She has 4 years of commercial real estate appraisal experience. Most recently, Katelin served as an associate at BBG/Leitner Group. At BBG/Leitner Group, she appraised a wide variety of property types including multi-unit residential, office, industrial, retail centers, mixed-use properties, and development sites. She is currently completing her education classes for state certification in New York State. Katelin holds a Master of Architecture Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design with a Real Estate Design and Development Certificate from the Wharton School. She also has a Bachelors of Arts Degree from New York University.

Diana has spent over four years in the commercial real estate appraisal industry. Diana is in the process of attaining her Certified General Appraiser License in New York. Diana earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Hospitality from the Questrom School of Business at Boston University. Although not a native Aussie, Diana joins the Australian contingent at Bowery after having studied abroad for a semester down under. During her free time, she likes to spend time with her dog, Jax, travel, and hike.

Timothy Lam is a senior appraiser at Bowery Real Estate Systems. He has worked in the real estate appraisal industry for a total of 6 years. Most recently, Mr. Lam served as an appraisal associate at Bonz and Company, Inc. located in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Mr. Lam has appraised multifamily residential, mixed-use, and commercial properties, as well as development sites specializing in affordable and mixed-income residential properties. Mr. Lam has also been engaged to perform residential market rental studies.  His clients include commercial banks, pension funds, private equity, government institutions, attorneys and developers.

Lee joined Bowery in 2017 after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his time there, Lee spent two summers with Barclays as an Investment Banking Analyst. In the summer, prior to joining Bowery, Lee was with Barclays’ Global Real Estate Coverage Group in New York. The summer prior, Lee worked with the firm’s Israeli Coverage Group in Tel Aviv, where he focused on Technology M&A. Before Barclays, Lee spent time as a Private Equity Due Diligence Fellow at Keiretsu Forum, the world’s largest private equity angel investment firm, with a focus on technology seed investing. At UNC, Lee was a Covenant Scholar, the University’s Student Body Treasurer, and a Senior Associate on the Kenan-Flagler Private Equity Fund. In his free time, he loves to travel, hike, exercise, and explore the parks, theatre, and good eats of New York!

Tom comes all the way from Melbourne, Australia, where he has over 6 years of Real Estate experience at Australia’s largest independent real estate advisory firm, Charter Keck Cramer. Tom began as an Assistant Appraiser, before moving into Tenant Representation brokerage services, working across Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Tom is currently in the process of obtaining the NY certified general appraisal license. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling and spending time outdoors.

Ross Wigon is a senior appraiser at Bowery Valuation. Prior to joining Bowery, Ross spent four years at Leitner Group Inc./BBG, where he appraised in excess of $5 billion worth of commercial property located primarily in the New York metropolitan area. Before that, he worked in an asset management capacity for Beach Lane Management, a family office with a ~$2 billion real estate portfolio under management. Prior to Beach Lane, Ross worked in commercial leasing for ABS Partners Real Estate, a brokerage and management firm based in New York City. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University's Questrom School of Business.

While at Penn, Katie spent a summer working as an Entrepreneur Selection and Growth Intern at Endeavor Global, an organization focused on selecting, mentoring and accelerating high-impact entrepreneurs in growth markets around the world. On campus, Katie co-founded The Glass Jar Fellowship, a student fellowship committed to engaging in philanthropy in West Philadelphia and was a part of the Campus Entrepreneurship Initiative. Previously, she  interned as an analyst at Boston Impact Initiative, a social impact investment firm.

She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin where she studied Nutritional Sciences and Art. Elle spends her free time exploring the city in search of the perfect roof-top spot for a glass of wine, or attempting a Monday crossword in her East Village studio with her boyfriend, Jack and their cat, Bentley.

A long-time college friend of Richard’s, David has a diverse background in Product, Risk, and Strategy within Technology and Financial Services. In a previous role as CEO/COO of Crucial, a multi-million dollar cloud web hosting startup, he has motivated and led global teams of up to 40 people, launched Australia's first managed GSuite product, and managed a successful exit for all shareholders. He is an accomplished electronic music producer and enjoys trying the spiciest of foods. He is excited to build out the Product function of Bowery to shape the future of appraisal in both New York and beyond.

Eugene is a passionate engineer who got his first computer at the age of 13 and has been having fun since then. His favorite quote is: "This is not the old, this is the new – we have a civic responsibility to build the type of tools that will enhance or improve one’s experience with his trade: save them time, do more work, or make them smile because they spent less time working on something today than they did yesterday."

He comes from diversity of industries ranging from banking to localization, however, he believes that his entrepreneurial calling was to do something unique. That calling is what brought him to Bowery, where he helps to reimagine the appraisal industry.

Iskandar was born in the center of Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan. Iskandar has been cutting code for over a decade, most recently at Kargo as a Senior Software Engineer and holds a Master of Science in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering from the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI). After meeting with John and Noah he realized that they share similar views in their desire and passion to create something great and fix what’s broken. In his spare time, Iskandar works on the first ever free online Tajik Persian dictionary and spends time with his daughter who is the sunshine of his life.

Sam is a passionate engineer who started coding and building things in high school and simply never stopped.  He has worked in and around tech startups for over a decade and brings a wide range of experience with him on topics ranging from rapid prototyping of commercial hardware and embedded control systems to the architecture and development of large scale web applications. Sam was extremely excited to join the Bowery team in early 2019 as in his own words. “The financial system is one of the most complex, long running, and beneficial pieces of tech that humanity has developed in its history.  The chance that Bowery has to lay the foundations for the next generation of such an important component of the financial sector as property valuation is one that I would very much like to be a part of.

She is a published translator and essayist, and enjoys stretching in hot yoga and reminding people that she’s Frènçh. Justin Knutson graduated from Princeton University in 2011 along with classmate cum business partner Cesar Devers and began a career as a serial entrepreneur in New York City. He joined up with the Bowery team near the end of 2016 as an engineer and later a product manager, contributing his valuable expertise in both disciplines to help Bowery deliver the best experience possible. A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Justin can be found outside of work practicing aikido, brewing beer, or immersing himself in any number of other offbeat pastimes.

After graduation, she moved to Washington, DC to start her career as a software developer for a consulting firm. Throughout her time in DC, Madeline focused on developing web applications and becoming Power Vinyasa Yoga certified. She then made the big move to NYC in Spring 2019 and started as a full stack engineer at Bowery. Madeline is thrilled to be working with and learning from all the talented people at Bowery, as well as exploring a new city!

Steve is the head of our business development and client services department. Steve came to Bowery after 3 years as the Head of Sales and Account Management at Eleven James, a luxury timepiece subscription service, where he managed a team of sales and account management professionals. Prior to Eleven James, Steve spent 4 years at Goldman Sachs in the Private Wealth Management division, helping manage a portfolio of ~$3 billion for ~100 high net worth and institutional investors. He received a dual degree in Finance and Management from Syracuse University. In his spare time, Steve enjoys traveling, scuba diving, all things sports and food related, and spending time with his wife Ali and his dog Jax.

Harry joined Bowery in July 2018 as Vice President of Finance, where he manages the company’s finance function. Previously, Harry spent two years at ff Venture Capital in a number of roles ranging from managing the firms due diligence efforts to helping portfolio companies with financial planning and analysis. Like many of the Bowery team, Harry grew up in Australia. While completing his Bachelor of Commerce, Harry interned with a number of professional service organizations, including Grant Thornton Australia, Strategic Project Partners, and Deloitte Australia. Additionally, Harry received a Graduation Diploma in Finance in 2015 from the Melbourne Business School before moving to New York in 2016 and is a current CPA and CFA candidate.

Matt moved to New York in 2018 after working for a consulting group in Connecticut where he brought on clients such as Pfizer, Hasbro, and Heineken. Upon moving to NY, Matt met John and Noah through mutual friends and was easily convinced to join Bowery's Operations team. Although he is gluten-free, he vehemently claims that Connecticut has the best pizza in the world.

Cass, hailing from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, joined Bowery in March 2019. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a double-major in Political Science and Linguistics. Prior to Bowery, she spent time as an event space manager where she coordinated film shoots, private events and company off-site retreats. She was also an office manager at a digital ad agency. When she's not keeping the office organized and in good spirits, Cass enjoys testing out new cooking recipes, thrift shopping, and running. She is a true believer that dog is man's best friend.

Before co-founding Bowery, Noah worked for BBG, valuing over $2.5 Billion worth of commercial real estate in New York. In 2010 he started his career in Baseball Operations, “Money-Balling” for the Toronto Blue Jays. Noah graduated from McGill University with a major in Statistics and a double minor in Operations Management and Labor-Management Relations. He has on multiple occasions lectured at Columbia University, with a primary focus on PropTech and the future of real estate. Noah loves numbers, all things data related, and scones.

Prior to co-founding Bowery, John worked at Leitner Group, now BBG, the largest independent appraisal firm in New York City. In his 4+ years there he valued over $3 billion of commercial property across all asset types. Frustrated with the antiquated process of appraising, but excited by the need for a better solution, he left to start Bowery with Noah and Cesar in June of 2015. John graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in US History. He still aspires to become a chef, a filmmaker, and the first left handed shortstop for the San Francisco Giants.

Cesar leads our team of full-stack engineers working on Bowery's appraisal platform. Cesar came to Bowery after two years as co-founder of Unicorn, a full-service development and design firm. There, he worked on web and mobile projects for companies ranging from pre-revenue startups to global Fortune 100 companies. Before that, he co-founded two startups: TonightLife and the Ascot Project. He has also written tutorials on iOS and JavaScript development. He received his bachelor’s from Princeton University.
